The Great Chevalier at Festival Artdanthé, Vanves

M. Chevalier and I were delighted to open the 27th edition of Festival Artdanthé in Vanves with The Great Chevalier; marking another of M. Chevalier’s visits to intimate venues, as he takes a hiatus from the Ballet National Folklorique du Luxembourg’s ongoing tour of Japan. This special performance took place on March 7 at the Théâtre de Vanves, where history, passion and virtuosity came together for an unforgettable evening of dance.

Returning to Vanves felt like a homecoming, as the BNFL shares a deep connection with the town. Mayor Bernard Gauducheau set the tone for the evening by recalling the legendary first performance of Josiane, the Country Girl by the sisters Joséphine and Claudine Bal – the company’s founders – a full five decades ago. How time flies. It was a poignant reminder of the historical roots that continue to shape our artistic journey, as well as the dynamic juncture that BNFL now finds itself in under the tutelage of M. Chevalier.

And of the man himself, ever the flamboyant visionary, he did not disappoint. In the unexpected and theatrical setting of the Vanves wedding hall, he took centre stage with a performance which included the famed Pigeon Dance – a virtuosic performance of technical brilliance, drawing gasps from the stunned audience.

We extend our deepest thanks to the entire team at Festival Artdanthé, Théâtre de Vanves and the ever-supportive Mayor Gauducheau. Also, of course, our wonderful audience for embracing the spirit of The Great Chevalier with such enthusiasm!
