Special Edinburgh Festival Announcement from M. Chevalier

My Public,

When I was a child, my mother would read to me the great classics of 19th century literature. Among my favourites were those Scottish men of letters – Robert Louis Stevenson and Sir Walter Scott, among others – who transported me through their words to the Athens of the North, to Edinburgh. I walked those cobbled streets to the Castle, down the famous Royal Mile – ‘what better street for a Knight’ she would say. Edinburgh has been in my dreams ever since.

So it is with honour and humility that today I announce my performances at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. I have accepted a most gracious invitation from Summerhall to perform 20 exclusive and intimate shows. My heartfelt thanks go to them and to Kultur | lx – Arts Council Luxembourg for their continued support.

Anyone with the most basic knowledge of the Ballet National Folklorique du Luxembourg will know the importance of this venue to the history of the Company. Formerly the Veterinary School of the University of Edinburgh, Claudine Bal’s prized stallion – Claude – was given emergency surgery here following an accident during rehearsals for a 1976 performance of Josiane, the Country Girl at Edinburgh Castle. Claude was startled by the Castle’s ‘One o’clock Gun’, stampeding down The Royal Mile and trampling horrified onlookers. Claude was said to have never been the same again and retired from performing, but his life was saved.

Summerhall is now one of the most prestigious venues in the city. I will be honoured to perform here; continuing a long and storied history between the Ballet National Folklorique du Luxembourg and my beloved Edinburgh.

Tickets will be available in April, so stay tuned for more information!
